Fire and Ice - Tapestries

Fire and Ice Inv 520 , 2012

Tapestry and Embroidary
48 x 48 in

Fire and Ice is embroidery and tapestry together. The design motifs incorporate ancient Chinese symbols in a new contemporary voice. The original title for this tapestry was "Decoration For The End of Time" John, Nancy's husband and partner thought the tapestry needed a friendlier title so he suggested Fire and Ice. Within the hour our friend William Barnes visited and was admiring the tapestry. I told him the title was Fire and Ice. Bill spontaneously recited the Robert Frost Poem: Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. Robert Frost
