S & Z patterns are in our lives every day. They represent each individual person as male and female and may have formed 1000s of years ago. I think of each piece of art being like an S or Z whose concept, color, form, & medium was formed years before by our country, grandparents & parent's lives. Nancy Kozikowski’s painting “S&Z - Small” is a captivating piece that blends abstract elements with cultural motifs. The painting features intricate patterns and subtle grades, creating a dynamic composition that draws the viewer in. The use of geometric shapes and flowing lines reflects Kozikowski’s signature style, while also paying homage to traditional Tongan tattoo designs. Inspiration from Tai Tenisi’s Tongan Pattern Tattoo: Nancy Kozikowski found inspiration for this painting in the traditional Tongan tattoo patterns of her nephew, Tai Tenisi. Tongan tattoos, known as “Tatatau,” are rich in cultural significance, symbolizing strength, resilience, and a deep connection to one’s heritage. The intricate black symmetrical patterns in Tai’s tattoo resonated with Kozikowski, leading her to incorporate similar motifs into her artwork. This fusion of traditional and contemporary elements highlights the universal language of art and its ability to bridge different cultures. Special Meaning of S and Z: The letters “S” and “Z” hold a special meaning for Nancy Kozikowski. They represent significant personal symbols in her life, representing male and female, often appearing in her works as recurring themes. By embedding these symbols into her paintings, Kozikowski creates a personal narrative that invites viewers to explore the deeper layers of her art.
